The Museum collection consists largely of artefacts directly, although sometimes indirectly,
associated with the Clan Macpherson and its associated families, which accords strictly with
the Museum Trust Deed.

Updating the Museum is a given. It's what we should do. However, were to start is a difficult and complicated question. Displays, content, the collection , viedeos, teaching centers the list goes on. This survey should be a helpful tool.
From the pictures online, the collection seems to be well presented.
It would be nice if there was artwork by MacPherson Clan members featured on a rotating basis. A space could be dedicated for photographs, paintings, pottery, sculpture, etc... by a featured person. It would be wonderful if we could celebrate the talents of our members!
We last visited the museum a number of years ago and enjoyed it a great deal. I do not know, though, how the collection has grown or how it is now exhibited
I would recommend some diorama's illustrating important events that tie the artifacts present to what happened. This could also be done as video's.

Linking members information to other online libraries, that is if they choose to share.
by attaching the clan museum as a reference to sites such as Cindy's List, The Latter Day Saints site, Ancestory.com, etc... - all great sources of information!!
I am not sure how to do this..maybe have on line files
By connecting other clans to clan MacPherson as in my family of Gordons and MacDonalds and Sinclairs.
make available on line genealogy search maybe links to other sites too.

14) Space

The Museum comprises exhibition and limited storage space, a library and small archive room. Overall, it has grown enormously in size over the last fifty years and the methods of display have changed beyond recognition.

Are we using the existing available space to the best possible advantage?

17) Governance & Staffing

At present the Museum is the responsibility of its Trustees who act through the agency of the
Museum Advisory Committee (MAC), a body made up of Trustees with the addition of other
members who need not necessarily be Association members.

The Curator is non-salaried but has accommodation and services provided. Assistance and
relief is provided by paid party-time workers (including a designated Shop Manager).

Is the present system of governance suitable for the needs of today and tomorrow?

19) Internal & External Relations

The Museum is at the heart of the Association and members are kept in touch by articles in
‘Creag Dhubh’ and Branch newsletters.

In the wider world, the Museum is fully registered, ie it has government approval and has
reached the status of being a ‘4 Star’ visitor attraction.

In some quarters the Museum may be looked on as a ‘closed shop’, of interest only to Clan
members and of little importance to the outside world.

How can we make the world aware that the Clan Museum is of importance in the
understanding of the history of Scotland in general and the Highlands in particular?

(The last five responses are given)

One would think that hiring a PR Firm would be best. However, we are so far from that at this time. Our website and online Electronic Museum is a great start. I’d hate to see it lose its “family feeling” charm right now. I think we should enjoy what we have and move carefully and thoughtfully forward.
One never knows where ones search for their roots mgiht take them. More information and having that information shared is always better.
prepare workshops/educational opportunities for your elemenary school/middle school age children - they are the ones to carry on this work.
I don't know
By including others, their association to our clan as well as Scotlands history.

20) Internal and External Relations - continued

How can we integrate fully into the local community and prove that the Museum is
as much their heritage as it is ours?

(The last five responses are given)

I feel we already are involved.
see answer to #19
maybe some local programs in the schools
locally advertise history included in museum
Keep circulars or advertisements in the lobby, regarding local business, where to find food, snacks, and other items of interest to tourists. Invite local business people to receptions or events in the museum, give them recognition, etc.

21) Income and Expenditure

At present, the running costs of the Museum are met by voluntary donations by the visiting
public together with profits from the shop. Interest from the Guardians Fund, set up a few
years ago, is dedicated to fabric maintenance. The Lady Sheila Endowment Fund is designed
to accumulate to provide Curatorial support, education and training.

Capital expenditure is generally met from funds with the occasional grant from public
sources.

Deficits are made up with an injection of money from the Association.

This somewhat precarious financial situation presents the greatest challenge to the running of
the Museum in the future.

The argument that all visitors should be required to pay an entrance fee has been aired
several times in the past, the general conclusion being that an entrance fee might prejudice
numbers and donations. It is worth noting that all national-owned museums and galleries in
Scotland have free entry.

Innovative ideas are required to put the Museum on a firm financial footing, at
present it relies on visitor numbers and generosity of Association members.

Practical suggestions for innovations to assist profitability are welcomed.

Win the lottery or rob a bank!
Expand gift shop sales.
On line donations from public, clan and donation box
Gift shop profits. Invite Clan members to donate hand made items to sell in the shop. Encourage crafts people to make items useful in present day life, but also have a tie to how things were made in historical times. Local businesses cannot object if Clan members make and donate objects to sell.
If each branch of the clan donated at least one item every 3 months, it should help start things off.
I do not have any at this time.

22) The Shop

As indicated above, the Shop provides an important source of income to pay for the running
costs of the Museum, including the salaries of staff and the Shop Manager. By convention,
the shop does not compete with other shops in the village in terms of the materials it stocks;
by and large, Museum shop stock relates to the Clan Macpherson.

Should the shop remain the same size as it is now, or should it be expanded to carry
more items?

25) IT and Technology

At the moment the Clan Macpherson Museum is a ‘low tech’ one with traditional displays in
show cases and behind glass.

The museums world is moving on and amazing electronic displays are now available,
ranging from touch-screens and moving images to virtual exhibits which invite the visitor to
take a leading and active part in the displays.

Do you think the Museum should be re-organised to keep up with current/ future
technology or stay in its present mode?

We have a wonderful Museum. Anyone who has seen the growth in the past 15 years knows how much personal time, love and care has been given to it by it’s many members. We should be proud of what we have and enjoy the beauty and it’s history right now. Move slow, set strong roots and it will remain a treasure for all to enjoy.
Best Wishes to the museum.

Keep the actual museum simple but woorth while for word of mouth interest, use more of the internet.
I have never visited the museum. However, it is important to have, throughout the building, places for people to sit down. Tourists spend a lot of time on their feet. Their stay can be extended if they have a place to sit down for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on.
Whether or not interactive displays are used should depend on the cost. Does the benefit and attraction of such displays really increase the attendance? It might be useful to have some type of attraction that appeals to children and video games and interactive sites might do that.
I have heard others speak of another museum in the area and the problem of getting people from there to the Clan site. Could you use golf carts to offer free "ferry service," to the Clan museum from the other site. The Minneapolis/StPaul airport uses golf carts to transport weary travelers from one concourse to the another. You simply sit in the colored chairs where you arrived until a cart comes by.You are taken to a central location where a cart going down a different concourse will pick you up. Volunteers staff the carts.
It might be feasible and profitable to sell MacPherson-specific items such as clan badges, clan-specific books, MacPherson tartan blankets, etc.
