Year of the Homecoming 2009

On the 25th and 26th July 2009 Edinburgh will witness one of the largest clan gatherings in history. Holyrood Park will host a Highland Games over the two days, then on the Saturday evening Clan members will march up the Royal Mile and take their seats on the castle esplanade for a Clan Pageant.

The Clan Macpherson Association intends be part of this historic event and we will have our own tent in Holyrood Park alongside many other clans. As this happens shortly before our own Gathering in Badenoch, plans are being made to link the two gatherings by holding events in Edinburgh and Badenoch to ensure our overseas members are given the best opportunity to make the most of their visit to Scotland. In addition, the Clan Chattan plans to extend their annual gathering which takes place the week after ours. It is possible therefore that you might want to attend events that will take place over a two/three week period.

To help you plan your visit and to enable the organisers to set the wheels in motion, the provisional programme for the Clan Macpherson is as follows:

Notes

  • The following attractions are available, free of charge, in Badenoch over the period 27th July - 10th August: Walking the Wildcat Trail and the Highland Folk Museum, both in Newtonmore. Clan Macpherson and Clan Chattan events prices will be given in due course on the application forms.
  • Please note the expedition to Cluny's cave is a strenuous climb, participants must be properly shod and have a good head for heights.
  • The Duke of Gordon Hotel, Kingussie is holding rooms for Macphersons until the 31st October only, so please book now if you wish to stay there because there are only 30 rooms left. Cost: £69 per person per night B&B based on 2 people sharing.
  • Tattoo tickets go on sale on 1st December and this year sold out within a few days. A block of tickets costing approx £25 each will be booked when they go on sale and a firm commitment including name and contact details will be required by 14th November - please e-mail sandymacpherson@caerketton.wanadoo.co.uk
  • Numbers for all events are expected to be high and when ticket applications are made, names will be required at the time of booking

  • Clan Chattan is organising a tour of Scotland for the week following the 2009 Gathering. This tour includes 3 nights in Kingussie during the CMA Rally and Newtonmore Games. While the Clan Chattan tour is not connected in any way with the CMA Rally, first time attendees - or those who have attended many times - may find this an attractive way to visit Scotland in 2009.
