Dancing is

Scottish,

Too!

When you are running a tent at Highland Festivals, as I do, you don't have much time to stroll around the games area. My pilgrimages are generally attached to lining up for mid-day ceremonies. But if you are there only as a visitor you try to take in as many things as possible. As you stroll around you'll see athletes, pipers, Highland dancers, Celtic musicians, and bands; all very exciting and awe-inspiring. You'll also be lured by the vendors of Scottish bric-a-brac trying to separate you from your money. However, none of these activities allows you to participate in the event. You stand (or sit) on the outside - a viewer at a museum (or circus, if you will) but you are not part of it. It's a vicarious experience - a "Game Boy" virtual reality.

That is, until you happen upon the Country Dancers. They are standing opposite their partners - lads in kilts, ladies in tartan sashes over white dresses. Then the music begins. They honor each other and the smiles break out on their faces almost spontaneously. They love what they are doing! (Otherwise they wouldn't be dancing in the sun on a 90° day!)

Sashes fly! Kilts swirl! Then the group's announcer offers the opportunity for an audience participation dance. Please, don't flee! This is your chance to be part of the action! You will have an opportunity to try a very simple dance with a strong partner - walking or skipping to the music. A member of the dance team approaches you, and asks you to dance. Don't shy away or make excuses! Get up and try! The person you are dancing with probably got started in exactly the same way. Won't YOU join the dance?

Most Scottish Country Dance groups have a performance or demonstration at the Games you attend. They are usually listed in the program. Many will include at least one - sometimes more - audience participation dances. Try it! It's fun, and you'll be introduced to some very nice people. You might even find a Macpherson in the group! HAPPY DANCING!
